Congratulations! to Mireles Elementary

Mireles Elementary has been recognized by The National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA) as part of its 2009 Just for Kids Campaign for Higher Performing Schools.NCEA used two measures in the analysis for this recognition: growth and college and career readiness (CCR). Schools recognized for growth achieved better improvement rates for their students compared with other school with similar demographics.  Schools recognized for CCR are the top five percent of schools in the state, based on the percentage of students scoring at or above NCEA's College and Career Readiness Targets.  Mireles was recognized  in two areas: 4th grade Writing and 5th grade Math and Writing.

Mireles Parent Connection

Some helpful hints for our parents regarding student study habits.
  • Encourage your student to treat studying as a daily assignment, not just something he/she does for a test.
  • Encourgae your student to review homework/information in several different ways.  He/she might use highlighters to highlight important information or use index cards to write spelling words or math facts on.  Then he/she can shuffle the cards and use them to study.  Try having your child read aloud to you and recite math facts to you aloud.  Some students remember facts more clearly if they "hear" them.
  • Have your child put his/her homework in their backpack right after they have completed it.  This will keep them from "forgetting it" the next day.

From the Principal

Congratulations to all of our Super Spellers!  I am proud of the students who participated in our K-5 Spelling Bee competitions.  Thank you to the parents who encouraged and practiced with the students.

Congratulations! to Lillie Stockseth, our Mireles Spelling Bee Champion.  She will represent our school at the Regional Spelling Bee.  Congratulations! also goes out to Mohamed Mohamoud for placing Alternate.  Both students are to be commended for their hard work and outstanding performance at the Mireles Spelling Bee.

Our Student Council members are participating in several service projects.  They will be visiting the Cimarron Rehabilitation Center to take fruit to the Senior Citizens and to play BINGO with them.  They are also collecting monetary donations for the Red Cross Haiti Funds.  Our students are learning to serve others and to participate in deeds of kindness.

We look forward to our Mireles Science Fair Week which will be held February 22-February 26.  Lets encourage all of our students to participate in this great learning opportunity.
